Mark Knopfler And Chet Atkins Neck And Neck Rarest
GIBSON CHET ATKINS CEC – 1997 SERIAL NUMBER: 91257605 DATE: APRIL 1997 Launched in 1982 and described in the Gibson catalogue of 1983 as “a nylon string solid body, all classic and all electric, all at the same time.” There were two versions of the nylon string, the CE classic electric had a normal guitar neck width (4.6 cm), and this the CEC which has a classic width neck (5 cm). There is also the CES, which is a steel string variant of the model. Due to many changes of management and ownership, Chet Atkins long standing association with Gretsch had ended, and in the early `80s he formed an alliance with Gibson that ran until his passing.
In the good days with Gretsch he had a say in the instruments that bore his name, and was very active in new ideas and this carried on in his subsequent relationship with Gibson. The CEC`s ability to be used on stage at high volumes without feedback made it an instant success. This example from 1997 is in superb condition, and plays really nicely, with a classical tone that defies logic in its similarity soundwise to a full-bodied acoustic classical guitar. CEC, classical electric, cutaway, Spruce top with a mahogany body, Two internal tone chambers Nylon strings, Classical guitar width neck and feel Six individual piezo pickups, each adjustable for volume, April 1997 is the year of manufacture (on the 125th day). A prime example of a unique and beautiful instrument, as used by Mark Knopfler! Oh, and Chet Atkins of course!
